Eco Fest, Death Done Differently, and Discover Yoga are partnering to host “The Green Goodbye,” a workshop exploring environmentally conscious alternatives to traditional end-of-life practices. The event will take place Sunday, Nov. 8, from 3 to 5 p.m. at Discover Yoga on the Landing, 110 W. Columbia St. in downtown Fort Wayne. The workshop invites attendees to consider how life and death are connected to the natural world and how final wishes can align with ecological sustainability. Participants will learn about alternatives to conventional burial and cremation, including conservation burial, human composting, water-based cremation, and other environmentally friendly options. Traditional end-of-life practices can have significant environmental impacts. Conventional burials may introduce embalming chemicals into the ground and require substantial natural resources, while flame cremation consumes fossil fuels and releases emissions into the atmosphere. Traditional cemeteries also occupy large areas of land that might otherwise support natural ecosystems. Led by Lauren Richwine of Death Done Differently, one of the first death doulas to serve families in the Midwest, the workshop will offer insight into gentler, more sustainable approaches to caring for the body after death. Guest specialists will also share how they support individuals and families navigating end-of-life decisions. Attendees will have the opportunity to participate in a hands-on demonstration showing how a loved one can be shrouded using simple, biodegradable materials. While some discussions may be tender or emotional, the gathering is also intended to celebrate humanity’s connection to nature, the choices available to families, and the ways our bodies can return to the earth. The workshop will be hosted by Discover Yoga, a community-centered space dedicated to helping people feel welcomed and supported. A limited number of tickets remain and must be purchased in advance for $20 at ecofestfw.com/events/. All ticket proceeds directly benefit Eco Fest’s mission to increase sustainability awareness and education.
