U14 Boys Competitive Team Show Resilience In League Opener
Oct. 9 at Wallingford (League Opener), L 5-3
By Coach Britt Hafner
The NHYS U14 Boys Comp team kicked off league play Friday night in Wallingford with a performance that showcased the determination and character of this young squad.
Facing adversity from the opening whistle, the team began the match with just nine players. Despite being shorthanded, the boys held Wallingford scoreless for the first six minutes before additional players arrived. Once at full strength, NHYS settled into the match, controlled the tempo, and entered halftime with an impressive 2-1 lead.
Playing with only 11 players and no substitutes, the young roster faced the challenge of competing on a full-sized field while many players logged their first full 80-minute match. As fatigue set in during the second half, Wallingford capitalized and pulled away for a 5-3 victory.
Despite the result, NHYS continued to battle until the final whistle and highlighted the night with a spectacular individual goal. Scoring three goals while playing an entire league match without a bench demonstrated the team’s skill, resilience, and competitive spirit.
While the season opener ended in a loss, the effort and growth displayed by the squad provided plenty of reasons for optimism as they look ahead to the remainder of the season. Coach and players alike left the field encouraged by the team’s performance and excited for what lies ahead.
U14 Boys Competitive Team
Oct. 10 at North Haven, L 3-0
By Coach Britt Hafner
The NHYS U14 Boys Comp team returned to action Saturday against North Haven, benefiting from a near full roster and the added depth that comes with having substitutes available.
With fresh legs on the sidelines, the team showed improved stability throughout the match. As players continue to learn one another’s strengths and develop chemistry on the field, maintaining consistency during substitutions proved to be an ongoing challenge. A disciplined and well-organized North Haven defense took advantage of those moments and limited the opportunities for NHYS’s dangerous attacking unit, resulting in a 3-0 victory for the home side.
One of the game’s brightest moments came when NHYS produced an excellent sequence of build-up play that ended with the ball in the back of the net. Although the goal was disallowed on an offside call, the play highlighted the offensive potential of the team and demonstrated the progress being made in the attacking third.
While there is still work to be done in refining team play and tactical execution, the continued growth and promise shown by this young squad provide plenty of optimism for the remainder of the season. Each match offers valuable experience, and the team continues to build toward reaching its full potential.
U13-15 Travel Rec Team Gains Valuable Experience Ahead of League Play
Oct. 11 at North Haven (Friendly), L 3-1
By Coach Britt Hafner
The NHYS U13-15 Travel Rec team traveled to North Haven this weekend for a friendly match, taking on the same club that faced the NHYS U14 Comp team. Battling through steady rain and challenging field conditions, the boys turned in a determined effort on North Haven’s home turf.
NHYS held strong throughout much of the first half and created several quality scoring opportunities, demonstrating growing confidence and teamwork. While the match ended in a 3-1 loss, the experience proved to be far more valuable than the final score.
For many players, the contest marked their first time playing a full-length game on a regulation-sized field, while several participants were competing in their first organized soccer match. Coaches used the opportunity to experiment with different positions and player combinations, helping the team develop chemistry and identify strengths across the lineup.
Despite the result, the team showed plenty of promise and continued growth. The experience gained against a quality opponent should serve the squad well as they prepare for their league opener this Friday night.
