U.S. Sen. Adam Schiff toured an immigration holding facility Tuesday at San Francisco International Airport, where he says some travelers are being held longer than policy allows and without being able to communicate with family or legal counsel within a reasonable timeframe. Schiff says the same thing is happening in Southern California. The senator said the Department of Homeland Security has been using a holding area to detain immigrants for longer than the 72 hours allowed when Customs and Border Protection flags them upon returning from international travel.
