HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- After an elementary schooler was assaulted by a 47-year-old stranger at a bus stop Friday morning, court documents obtained by 8News say that the incident was "random and unprovoked."
A bystander called 911 at around 7:33 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 16, to report an assault t
hat was occurring at a school bus stop, according to the criminal complaint filed by an officer with the Henrico County Police Division.
The caller observed a Black woman in a red shirt actively attacking a child, the complaint said.
Police then responded and found a 9-year-old boy with "obvious injuries" to his face. Officials took the child to a local hospital.
The caller then told a responding police officer that he initially heard commotion outside and went out to see a woman, later identified as 47-year-old Marie Marsh, "beating" the child.
The caller reportedly said that Marsh ended her alleged attack without the caller needing to physically intervene. The complaint said that the caller stayed at the scene until police arrived.
The officer said in the complaint that based on the caller's reports, the attack was "random and unprovoked."
The child reportedly had obvious injuries to his face, including redness in his right eye and swelling around his eye, as well as swelling in his lips.
According to the complaint, Marsh was detained by police officers who happened to be in the area for a paving job and heard the yelling before the caller called 911.
Marsh reportedly told officers that there was a male who attacked the child and that she intervened. The complaint further said that in the process, she claimed she threw the child to the ground to defend him.
According to the complaint, Marsh later said she suffers from bipolar disorder and is mentally challenged.
Marsh was charged with assault, police said. She is slated to appear in court next on Dec. 14.
