Judge Asks DOJ Lawyers: Should I Believe Trump About His East Potomac Plans?
Oct 19, 2026
Judge Ana C. Reyes had a simple question for the Department of Justice’s lawyers today, which boiled down to, in essence: should I believe the president or not?
President Trump posted to Truth Social late Sunday night “that the Department of the Interior, under the auspices of Secretary Doug Bur
gum, and in conjunction with famed Golf Course Architect, Tom Fazio, has developed a plan to build a World Class Championship Golf Course on the site of the current East Potomac Golf Links,” adding that it would be closed as of November 15.
The plaintiffs in a lawsuit that aims to stymie the president’s efforts on East Potomac Park entered the post into evidence, and in a long hearing that extended well into Monday afternoon, Reyes asked the government, in light of the president’s posts, how they could argue that there wasn’t imminent action planned at East Potomac Golf Links.
“I want you to treat the post like an executive order,” the DOJ lawyer repeated on loop over the course of a 20-minute confrontation with the judge. According to his reading, the president is simply directing policy that has yet to be concretized.
Reyes pushed back, saying to the lawyers that their comparison to an executive order does not answer her original question, and suggested heavily that their answer implies that she should not believe the president.
She also asked if the lawyers are aware of a contract between the government and Fazio, and, after conferring, the government lawyers said that there is not yet a contract. Later, Reyes added that she is highly unlikely to tell the government to stop all activities in the park, but she is not going to blindly trust the government either.
The president added early Monday morning that, “The experts at ‘Interior’ are allowed to do this First Class renovation ‘as of right.” They do not need an approval. Work is scheduled to begin IMMEDIATELY!” and attacked both Reyes herself and the plaintiff in the case.
“The judge on the case is a crazed lunatic whose courthouse tapes will reveal, may be insane? The tapes have been blocked from usage by the judge. The random golfer bringing the ridiculous lawsuit has ZERO STANDING!”
Alex Dickson, one of the two golfers suing the government, responded to the president on Instagram from his Beltway Golf account, saying “I’ve been called worse.”
