SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- A report surfaced Monday in the San Francisco Chronicle indicating that the space that was once home to San Francisco City Centre Mall is being eyed for development as a data center. KRON4 reached out to Maryland-based KG Growth Partners and confirmed that while the property was being evaluated for a project that would include a data center, it would be a conventional server-based data center. According to Jared Krieger of KG Growth Partners, the development firm has a client evaluating potential purchase of the empty mall, including the Bloomingdale's portion. The client is an AI lab, although Krieger declined to name which one. Berkeley’s beloved Nabolom Bakery closes, blames political backlash, high costs If the client moves forward with purchasing the property, it would acquire the entire space and move its offices into the building. Additionally, there are plans for an "AI exhibit" that would be open to the public to showcase the "potential uses and enhancements that AI can make to everyday life." Operating the AI lab and the AI exhibit would require a data center with servers, although Krieger maintains, it would not be the sort of server-based data centers that have drawn pushback from communities nationwide. The data center would occupy the upper floors of the mall along with back-of-house space. Under the plan, about a third of the building's space would be dedicated to AI. The remaining two thirds would be leased out to subtenants with priority given to local businesses, education, and public benefit tenants. That space, according to Krieger, would also include green space, a roof level park, and cultural and historical spaces. ...read more read less
