State Rep. Tiara Auxier’s campaign website promises to fight for “Our Values, Our Families, and Our Future.” Utah voters should ask who gets included in “our.” Auxier argues that parents should control their children’s religious upbringing without government interference. Yet s he served as House sponsor of S.B. 268, Religious Curriculum in Schools. Teaching religion’s influence on American history is appropriate. Ensuring that instruction respects religious and nonreligious families is essential. Parents’ rights must extend to the parent who disagrees with you. Otherwise, the principle becomes permission for the majority to choose for everyone else. Her preferred curriculum lists grammar, logic, rhetoric, arithmetic, history and the arts. Science is conspicuously absent. That omission does not prove she opposes science education, but voters deserve an explicit commitment to rigorous, evidence-based instruction. Utah’s future doctors, farmers and engineers will need more than a reassuring campaign slogan. Her emphasis on girls’ sports also deserves scrutiny. Fairness matters. So does the dignity of transgender children. Voters should expect concrete commitments to protect students from bullying and improve classroom learning alongside arguments about athletic eligibility. That is why I support Zane Woolstenhulme. His nearly 40-year career in public finance and education administration, including 12 years as Ogden School District’s business administrator, offers relevant experience managing the resources our schools depend on. For 36 years, I have served as a public school teacher in Utah, committed to ensuring that my students receive a rigorous, meaningful and enriching education. Public education must welcome and serve families from all backgrounds and with a diversity of beliefs. No child should ever have to pass an ideological test to belong, feel valued, or succeed in our schools. Our future is our children. All of them.
