Home from the Vietnam War premieres at Heartland Film Fest
INDIANAPOLIS – A U.S. combat veteran returns to Vietnam to find closure in a new documentary premiering at the Heartland Film Festival in Indianapolis.
“Home From the Vietnam War” follows Lt. Lee Alley, a decorated veteran who
fought in some of the Vietnam War’s bloodiest battles. The film documents Alley returning to Vietnam with a friend who fled the war as a child.
Director Mat Hames said he initially hoped to find locals who remembered the battles Alley fought in, but said a Vietnamese crew working on the production was able to find survivors of the actual battalion Alley fought against.
“It was surreal. The Vietnamese battalion all showed up in uniform,” Hames said. “Then they sat down and started to hash out the details of the battle. And you’ll just have to see the film to see what happens.”
The documentary made its premiere Friday night as part of the Heartland Film Festival and will have a second screening during the festival’s final day on Sunday, Oct. 18 at 3:15pm. Tickets are available online.
Hames said “Home From the Vietnam War” has garnered positive responses from veterans and hopes it can challenge preconceived notions about the soldiers who fought in Vietnam.
“The people that fought in Vietnam were every bit as courageous as the people that fought in World War II,” Hames said. “It was just a different time and a different war.”
Following its festival run, “Home from the Vietnam War” will stream on YouTube as well as Alpheus Media’s channels beginning Nov. 12.
