HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- Community members gathered in Henrico's East End on Saturday to dig up local history at the Wolf Creek Cherokee Tribe of Virginia's 10th annual Archaeology Dig. The archaeology dig brings dozens of people to a site in Henrico County's Varina area each year to search fo r artifacts, some dating back 16,000 years. "It's always important to talk about history," said Annette Price, museum coordinator for the Wolf Creek Cherokee Cultural Center and Museum. "And to see who has lived here, who's continuing to live here and the things that we can find." The event is free, open to the public and provides an opportunity to learn about Native American history, Price said. The dig moves to various areas of the same site each year, and the group finds different items in each section. "We found three Clovis points that were 16,000 years old." While finding unique items is always a highlight, the annual dig isn't just about the artifacts. It's also a way for people to come together and discover more about the communities and cultures that surround them -- and the history that hides just underfoot. "The best thing is that you see how many people are willing to come out here, even in the bad weather, to get down on their knees and dig in the dirt, in the rain, but they're all having a great time," Price said. ...read more read less
