I disagreed with Malena Stevens on Dakota Pacific. I’m voting for her anyway because a clerk should be judged on competence and fairness. When Summit County Clerk Eve Furse retired early this spring, with two elections months away, Malena was the only person who stepped forward. She has run ou r elections ever since, after helping certify the 2022 and 2024 results as a County Council member. She did her homework before she ever filed for clerk, serving as a poll watcher in 2025 and meeting with the former clerk and her staff to learn the job. As clerk, she keeps inviting the public to observe the process, and people have shown up to watch. Suni Woolstenhulme hasn’t. She had already launched her campaign before this year’s primary, and she never came to observe any part of it. She hasn’t asked a single question of the people who run our elections. She promises to streamline the office, but you can’t streamline a system you’ve never even watched work. She told The Park Record the clerk’s job is “truly nonpartisan.” Then why is she running as a Republican? Utah lets candidates file unaffiliated. She took the party nomination instead, and county GOP Chair Ari Ioannides pledged party money to her campaign. That same chair, who lost his own County Council race in 2024, now assures us she’ll serve “without political favor.” Let’s be honest: She’s a Republican, just as Malena is a Democrat. Anyone can act without favor. We’ve watched Malena do it for years. With Suni, all we have is the Republican Party’s word. Ask her supporters why she’s the better choice, and you mostly hear why they don’t like Malena. That’s not a reason. That’s a grudge. If you missed Friday’s Oct. 16 radio debate, find the recording. Listen for who answers with specifics and who leans on talking points. The Legislature rewrites election law nearly every year, and a clerk who gets it wrong puts your ballot at risk. So, who do you want running your elections? The candidate who did her homework and keeps showing up? Or the Republican nominee, with Republican money behind her, who skipped the homework and still calls herself nonpartisan? Vote Malena Stevens.
