Mad River Donuts to Move to Montpelier From Waitsfield
Oct 16, 2026
About 2.5 years after opening Mad River Donuts at 6163 Main Street in Waitsfield, owner Kyle White confirmed he will move the business to Montpelier by the end of this year. White said he loves the Mad River Valley but sees room for expansion in Vermont’s capital city with more consistent custome
r traffic and a larger space.
White, 39, has signed a lease on 45 State Street, which most recently housed Chico’s Tacos Bar for less than a year before that restaurant closed in August. He hopes to open there in December and will keep running his Waitsfield shop for now. In the meantime, he plans to introduce himself to his new community by selling doughnuts made in Waitsfield at Mad River Donuts’ future location every Sunday from noon to 2 p.m., starting October 18.
The chef started working in kitchens as a teenager and earned a culinary degree from Johnson Wales University in his native Rhode Island. He moved to Vermont in 2019 to work at the Pitcher Inn in Warren and then at the Warren Store from 2022 to early 2024, before leaving to launch Mad River Donuts.
White works alone with some help from his girlfriend, Rin Merrick. He said he focuses mostly on classic flavors, such as Boston crème, maple-glazed and vanilla frosted with sprinkles, using a base brioche dough. His old-fashioned buttermilk doughnuts are based on an heirloom family recipe from Neill Farm in Waitsfield.
At his original spot, White shares kitchen space with Backcountry Bagels and offers sandwiches made with those organic, hand-rolled, sourdough bagels as well as espresso drinks. He hopes to offer both when he gets up and running in Montpelier, and would also like to continue serving the Mad River Valley with regular doughnut deliveries.
