RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- The man accused of killing his neighbor in a burglary in Richmond's Church Hill neighborhood appeared in court on Friday for the first time.
Judge David M. Hicks denied bond for 73-year-old James Carter, who is charged with burglary with intent to commit murder and shooting
into an occupied dwelling.
The Commonwealth is seeking an additional first-degree murder charge.
Carter is accused of shooting and killing his neighbor, 47-year-old Shawn Champion, during a burglary on Wednesday, Oct. 14. The prosecutor shared that Champion was shot multiple times and there was a verbal argument beforehand.
Richmond Police found Champion unresponsive with gunshot wounds outside a home on North 31 St. He later died at the hospital.
Carter's defense shared that he is a lifelong Richmond resident, worked at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) and worked at the Richmond Sheriff's Office.
He reportedly had no criminal record prior to the shooting.
