RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Shonda Champion says she received the news no loving sister wants to hear: her brother had been shot and killed outside of his home.
During a burglary on Wednesday, October 14, Richmond Police say 47-year-old Shawn Champion was found lying unresponsive with a gunshot wound o
utside a home in the 1400 block of N. 31st Street. He later died at a local hospital.
"It hasn't clicked to none of us, because it just was so sudden," Shonda Champion told 8News Thursday night during an exclusive interview. "I just feel numb. I'm trying to be calm about it."
In the wake of this devastating loss, Shonda told 8News what made Shawn so special.

"He was loving," Shonda said. "He was caring. My momma died -- he wanted to step in and take her place. We didn't like it at the time, but now, we're sitting here and thanking him for it."
Shawn's neighbor, 73-year-old James Carter, is charged with burglary with intent to commit murder and shooting into an occupied dwelling.
"I don't know why the neighbor would rob him or anything, or try to break into the home," Shonda said. "That's new to me."
Her boyfriend, Justin Williams, added: "Regardless of what you're arguing about or whatever it was, it wasn't worth it."
Both are trying to stay positive, remembering Shawn's sense of humor.

"Enjoy the moments you have now with your family, and cherish those moments you have with your family, before it's too late," Shonda said. "Because unexpected things like this may happen."
Carter is due in court for a bond hearing the morning of Friday, Oct. 16.
