A man is dead after a security guard shot him during a disturbance at a Fort Worth shopping center Wednesday night, according to police. Fort Worth Police said officers were called to a reported shooting at about 8:38 p.m. at the La Gran Plaza shopping center in the 4200 block of South Freeway. When officers arrived, they learned an adult man had been inside the shopping center damaging a jewelry kiosk with a blunt object, police said. According to Fort Worth Police, an armed security guard working inside the shopping center was nearby as the man smashed glass display cases. At some point during the incident, a security guard working at the shopping center encountered the man. “As the male was smashing the glass casing, at some point, the security guard fired his weapon at the male, striking him at least one time. The details surrounding the shooting are still being investigated,” Fort Worth Police Department spokesperson Officer Buddy Calzada said during a late-night briefing. Police said the man ran out of the shopping center, crossed the parking lot and collapsed near Seminary Drive. Officers and Fort Worth firefighters arriving at the scene found the man and began lifesaving measures, including CPR. He was pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel. Police said no Fort Worth officers fired their weapons during the incident and no other injuries were reported. Detectives stayed at the scene overnight collecting evidence and interviewing witnesses. Investigators have not released the identity of the man who was killed. The Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office will determine the man’s identity as well as the cause and manner of death. According to the hours posted on the plaza’s website, La Gran Plaza was open at the time of the incident but was preparing to close at 9 p.m. Police are asking anyone who witnessed the incident or has video to contact Fort Worth police at 817-392-4222.
