Oct 14, 2026
(KRON) -- Grocery Outlet is taking over the Walgreens in Oakland's Lake Merritt neighborhood that permanently closed in early 2025. The store's grand opening will be on Thursday, Oct. 22, according to a news release by Grocery Outlet.
This Grocery Outlet will be located at 301 18th St. in Oakland,
a couple blocks away from the Lake Merritt water. The discount grocer will be across the street from another grocery store, Lucky.
The grand opening begins with a ribbon-cutting at 10:30 a.m.

Beginning at 8 a.m. on the grand opening day, the first 100 customers will receive a gift card for a mystery amount of up to $500, the release states. Customers, with any purchase, will receive a free reusable bag during opening week. They can also enter to win $1,000 in free groceries from Oct. 22 to Nov. 20.
The Oakland Grocery Outlet is not the only Bay Area location to take over a shuttered Walgreens. In Daly City last month, Grocery Outlet moved into the former space of a longtime Walgreens. In 2024, Walgreens announced it would close 1,200 stores across the country over the next three years.
