BATON ROUGE mdash; The Downtown Development District (DDD) met for its regular monthly meeting Tuesday morning to discuss several major shifts planned for the city's urban core.Among the primary items on the agenda were future management strategies for the Raising Cane's River Center and ongoing de molition projects across downtown. However, the most debated topic was a proposal to relocate the Baton Rouge Police Department's Second District Headquarters from its current home on Highland Road into a historic building on 3rd Street. The proposed move sparked immediate feedback from local leadership regarding the impact on surrounding neighborhoods."It would not be in order, it would not be right for me to move that just to concentrate really on downtown and not make sure that there is no void left on Highland Road," said Councilwoman Carolyn Coleman during the meeting. "You're talking about at the mouth of the south, you're talking about at the mouth of LSU. And so safety is first, is what I am striving for throughout the district."Coleman emphasized that while downtown growth is critical, maintaining safety infrastructure and avoiding a security vacuum near the LSU corridor remains a non-negotiable priority for district residents.WBRZ will continue to follow this story as development plans progress.Permalink| Comments ...read more read less
