Bryan Cranston is mourning the death of “Breaking Bad” co-star RJ Mitte, who played his son on the hit AMC series. Representatives for Mitte confirmed Oct. 12 that he had died at age 34. No cause of death was given. On “Breaking Bad,” Mitte played Walter “Flynn” White Jr., a teen w ith cerebral palsy and the son of Cranston’s Walter White. Cranston wrote in an Instagram post on Oct. 12 that he was in “deep despair.” He recalled Mitte was 14 when he was cast as his son, a role “he played with joy and enthusiasm.” “Born with Cerebral Palsy, he never — ever — allowed that challenge to be an excuse for anything. He met the demanding shooting schedule head on with great determination,” Cranston captioned a photo of the two of them. “Always listening to the advice that his TV parents (Anna Gunn and myself) gave him — but being a teenager, sometimes mischievously ignoring the counsel in order to learn the hard way… He was one of the stars of a hit TV show — but still a kid,” he added. Mitte appeared in 56 episodes of “Breaking Bad” between the five seasons it aired from 2008 through 2013, according to IMDB. Cranston wrote that Mitte was hardly a seasoned veteran when they began the series, but he eventually grew into his own. “That kid was pretty raw when we started shooting the pilot in February of 2007, but little by little we watched him grow into a really fine actor,” he wrote. “He parlayed his experience on the show to be a vocal advocate for performers with disabilities, and was the head of a philanthropic organization with a focus on helping the disabled community. “All that promise and potential now is such a loss,” he continued. Cranston also looked back at how they recently spoke and discussed getting together in person. “We were texting each other just a few weeks ago — figuring out when we could meet for lunch,” he wrote. “I don’t know if that lunch would have changed his future…But I do know that I loved him, and thoroughly enjoyed being with him throughout the years on the series, and after the spotlight on Breaking Bad dimmed…I’ll miss you, son.” Reps for Mitte confirmed to NBC News on Oct. 12 that the actor had died. “It is with profound sadness that we share the tragic passing of beloved actor, philanthropist, and passionate disability rights advocate RJ Mitte,” a representative said in a statement. Texas Justice of the Peace Judge Cyndi Hinojosa also confirmed that Mitte died Oct. 12 in Brownsville, Texas, adding he was “very beloved in our community” and that “his family has deep ties” in the city. In addition to his acting work, Mitte was an ambassador for United Cerebral Palsy and Shriners Children’s, as well president of The Mitte Foundation, supporting philanthropic efforts and community initiatives, his reps said. He also used “his platform to challenge stereotypes and promote greater representation for people with disabilities,” the statement added.
