A 29-year-old reality television personality known as “Kash” was shot and killed in downtown Oakland Sunday morning, and her family is remembering her as a vibrant woman with big dreams while authorities investigate the homicide.
Oakland police identified the victim as Mackayla Paige, who was
killed around 1:30 a.m. Sunday near 14th and Harrison streets. Witness video showed police and emergency crews lining 14th Street and appeared to show Paige being loaded into an ambulance. Police said she was taken to a hospital, where she later died.
Paige was known for her appearances on online reality shows, including “The Young and the Reckless” and “Roommates.” The streaming platform “Now That’s TV” posted a tribute calling Kash a “beloved member” of their network.
Her cousin, Azima King, said the family is grappling with grief and frustration.
“Angry, that’s all I feel right now,” King said, describing feelings of anger and disbelief.
King remembered her cousin as a bright presence who dreamed of a successful entertainment career.
“She was lively, the life of the party, she wanted to have fun and wanted positive energy around her,” King said. “She wanted to be somebody. She wanted to make it, she had big plans and dreams.”
King also pushed back against online narratives surrounding Paige, noting that she was a model who aspired to be an actor.
“She motivated people, she inspired people,” King said. “People like to put out a negative narrative about her, but that’s not who she is.”
Social media videos posted to various sites appeared to show Paige involved in a confrontation in the moments before she was shot. Oakland police subsequently arrested a woman from Richmond in connection with the shooting, though investigators have not released the suspect’s name or a motive for the violence.
King lamented that the tragedy struck when Paige should have been safe.
“Unfortunately she was with the people she felt the safest with, and she was supposed to be alright,” King said. “She was supposed to make it home.”
As controversy grows over videos circulating online since Paige’s death, King urged the public to focus on her cousin’s aspirations rather than her final moments.
“Remember her for what she wanted to be, what she gave you all, the star that she was,” King said. “Don’t remember her for that video.”
A growing memorial has been established at the site of the shooting. The investigation remains ongoing.
