(KRON) -- A Fremont resident is recovering from severe brain injuries, skull fractures and rib fractures following an altercation outside her home on Sept. 30. Elsei Arling was hospitalized for seven days after a neighbor snatched her phone and threw her to the pavement at approximately 7:30 p.m. The attack was captured on home security footage from Arling's residence. Arling, who works in hospice care, returned home on a Saturday after being treated in an intensive care unit. She sustained lower-body trauma and multiple concussions as a result of the violent encounter. Security video recorded the moment the neighbor's tenant grabbed Elsei Arling's mobile device before throwing her to the ground. A vehicle then arrived, and the driver confronted the suspect. The footage captured the sound of the suspect smashing Arling's phone on the pavement. Arling noted that the suspect had exhibited aggressive behavior before the assault, including shouting at her neighbor. “She said she's scared she even called me and sometimes said there are sometimes for him to throw things in my room,” Arling said regarding previous interactions with the neighbor. 2 retired SFPD officers, daughter killed in suspected murder-suicide Following the attack, Arling woke up in the hospital intensive care unit with no memory of the event itself. She continues to experience dizziness, difficulty chewing, and memory loss. “I don't remember what happened…. I don't remember… till I woke up from the hospital ICU,” Arling said. She also suffered 50% hearing loss in her right ear and struggles to recall routine details, including the names of her pets. “When I chew things it hurts and my right ear, it has only 50% of hearing,” Arling said. “Like I don't remember my cats name… I don't remember my dogs name…” Her husband, Dutch Arling, received an emergency notification on his mobile phone regarding police activity at their home while he was away. After failing to reach his wife by phone, he reviewed the security footage and saw the assault. “And that's when I found out she got attacked…. And it was horrible… I'm reliving it now …. But the feelings that I got when I wasn't there…….” Dutch Arling said. Watch the full video in the video player above. Security camera footage shows the moments leading up to the attack. The couple also faced the difficult task of informing their young son about the violent incident. “But he's a strong boy,” Dutch Arling said. Because Arling is unable to work during her recovery, the family created a GoFundMe campaign to cover accumulating medical bills and household expenses. Dutch Arling noted that his wife is currently unable to provide hospice care to her patients. “She has the heart of gold,” Dutch Arling said. The Arling family is actively working with the Fremont Police Department to assist in identifying and apprehending the suspect. “So we do want justice, we do want him to be caught,” Dutch Arling said. “For something as simple as holding a phone that could trigger something, nobody should be in that kind of position.” All facts in this report were gathered by journalists employed by KRON4.
