The world premiere of “Whimsy!” opens Thursday night at Heber City’s historic Ideal Playhouse, bringing two weekends of music and imagination to the Heber Valley. Written by local playwright and artist Susette Gertsch, “Whimsy!” is an original fantasy musical presented by Art Around th e Square, a nonprofit arts organization. The production features local performers of all ages, with music, dance, colorful costumes, imaginative staging and special effects. Opening night will feature a special red-carpet celebration, organizers said. Audience members are invited to dress up for the occasion, whether in elegant evening attire or costumes inspired by the magical world of “Whimsy!” Steampunk enthusiasts, fairy-inspired characters, storybook fans, and woodland wizards. Themed attire is encouraged but optional at all performances. To maintain a fun, family-friendly and whimsical atmosphere, masks and scary or gory costumes are not permitted, organizers said. At the heart of “Whimsy!” is the story of a 17-year-old light-spinning heroine longing to discover family and rediscover her lost muse. Along the way, she encounters memorable characters, unexpected adventures, and a few hilarious moments with her intrepid coach, Aunt Hattie.   “‘Whimsy!’ is a story of genuine courage, love, and imagination. It celebrates the creative spark in every heart,” said Gertsch. “I never dreamed Whimsy’s message would be so important to young people but it’s so obvious now that we want them to attend for free. Adults will appreciate the sophisticated music, youth will find self-worth and power of freedom in “being who you are,” and kids will love little Wild Child, a young star stage. The music is outstanding and we invite audiences of all ages to experience this magical first time ever production together.” “Whimsy!” showcases the talents of local performers, artists, production professionals, volunteers, and community supporters. Funding is provided in part by Heber City and Wasatch County TAP Tax revenues, Art Around the Square, and community sponsors and donors.
