Michael Charles DeForge, 76, of Morrisville p
assed away on October 1, 2026 at Mayo nursing home with his daughter Jasmine, his best friend Pete Jones, and his son-in-law Jonathan by his side.
He was born to Marjorie (Bailey) DeForge and Robert DeForge in Montpelier, and was the eldest of four children.
Michael graduated from Spaulding High School in Barre, VT in the later 60’s. He attended Vermont College of Norwich University where he majored in Psychology.
In the 70s Michael joined the United States Marine Corp during the Vietnam Era. He was very proud to have been a Marine (once a Marine, always a Marine).
Michael worked very hard at his sobriety of more than twenty-five years, and his daughter Jasmine was proud of him. Easy does it! He was deeply committed to AA; he was a long time member and sponsor to many.
He held positions within the mental health field including working at the Vermont State Hospital and in the Lamoille Valley. But, his favorite job was working at Big Lots in Morrisville, assembling furniture. He got great joy from his work there and spoke very fondly of the friends he made.
An avid outdoorsman, Michael could often be found hunting and fishing the woods and waters of East Montpelier, Calais, and Woodbury. He built an off the grid home with his own two hands in the woods of Hardwick, VT.
Michael enjoyed listening to jam bands, and even played bass guitar in his own band during the 90s. One of his favorite bands was Dire Straits and he also enjoyed The Grateful Dead and of course wearing tie dye t-shirts.
Michael was preceded in death by his father Robert DeForge and his mother Marjorie DeForge.
He is survived by his daughters, Jasmine Boucher and her husband Jonathan, Nova DeForge and her husband Bert Johnson, and their children Gibson and Maddilynn, Angela Martin, Tauni Martin, and Sonia Macie. He is survived by his siblings Valerie, Frank, and Tom, his best pal Pete Jones, several grandchildren, nieces, nephews and good friends.
For those who would like to honor and celebrate Michael, please consider being kind to those who are a bit different, who don’t quite “fit in”, who have caring hearts, and just want to belong.
