HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — As Hurricane Isaias moves toward the Gulf Coast, American Red Cross workers are mobilizing to support relief operations across multiple states. The Virginia Red Cross is sending five of its workers as Isaias is expected to hit the South. Two of those workers, Walter L egg and Emma Tofani, talked about their mindset as they headed to Pensacola, Fla., from Richmond International Airport. “This is my 11th or 12th deployment," Legg said. "It's become something I'm really comfortable with." Legg is a facilities manager and will look for shelters, headquarters and potentially a warehouse organizer can operate out of. “You never know what's going to happen with the storm, so there's a little bit of nervousness about that,” Legg said. “I've had a good life. I've had times in my life that have been very, very difficult. This is my opportunity to give back, to help people who need our support in a time of crisis.” For 23-year-old Tofani, it’s her sixth deployment for volunteer work. “I was getting ready for a gender reveal party for a family member of mine, and I got the call," Tofani said. "I just got back to Virginia two or three days ago... I would hope if I was in a situation like this, there are people that would want to come from across the country to come help me.” Other than helping those in need, Tofani said she enjoys meeting those with the same goal as her. “A lot of times I go on a deployment after 2 or 3, I start seeing the same faces again, like, 'Hey, I saw you in Texas and it's been a year, but how are you?'” Legg said. “Everyone has a cool and unique story, and it's really awesome to get to hear that and listen to it and relate yourself to that.” Both workers will be deployed for two weeks. Both Florida and Alabama have declared states of emergency and mandatory evacuations have been ordered for some coastal areas in the two states.
