Mayo Bridge resurfacing to begin next week in Richmond
Oct 08, 2026
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Efforts to resurface Richmond's Mayo Bridge will begin in mid-October, the city announced Tuesday.
Resurfacing work and lane closures will run daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Oct. 13 to Oct. 23, depending on weather. One lane in each direction will be open to traffic during cons
truction, the Tuesday, Oct. 6 release said.
Work will cover the full length of the bridge approach area from the north floodwall to the south floodwall.
After resurfacing is completed, the Mayo Bridge will transition from its current four-lane configuration to a two-lane pilot road diet, with one travel lane in each direction and full-width shoulders, according to the release.
This pilot lane configuration is designed to evaluate how the corridor functions, manage traffic during upcoming construction projects and create additional separation between moving vehicles and bridge sidewalks, officials said.
According to the release, the bridge currently has a Pavement Condition Index (PCI) of 0, meaning it has reached the end of its useful life.
The resurfacing project will enable the Mayo Bridge to provide reliable service until its planned replacement in the coming years, officials said.
The city asked travelers to slow down and remain alert when approaching construction areas.
