RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — A former Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) Rams baseball player and U.S. Marine Corps service member has died in a training accident, according to announcements from the school and a friend. VCU Baseball announced the death of 2018 pitcher Garrett Pearson on Wednesday morning via social media, calling him "a dear friend and teammate and dedicated U.S. Marine Corps service member." According to veteran-focused nonprofit The Travis Manion Foundation, Pearson died Saturday night at 30 years old after "an unexpected training incident." He was a Marine captain. According to a GoFundMe for Pearson's wife, Autumn, he is survived by his wife and two daughters — one is 3 years old and the other will celebrate her first birthday in December. The training incident took place off the coast of South Florida, the post reads. "Garrett was an amazing friend, a devoted husband, but most of all an incredible father," the GoFundMe says. "He loved them so deeply. His role as a 'girl dad' was the most important thing to him." The fundraiser has raised over $105,000 of its $180,000 goal as of Wednesday. ...read more read less
