ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- A man accused of sexually assaulting children while working for Albemarle County Public Schools is now facing additional charges after three more victims came forward. In early June, following a months-long investigation, the Albemarle County Police Department arrest ed 37-year-old Michael J. Swiney of Buckingham County on 11 charges related to his alleged sexual abuse of children while working for Albemarle's school district. Police initially began looking into Swiney in January after a child came forward, saying a school staff member had touched them in an inappropriate and sexual manner. Three additional children reported similar abuse, saying these incidents occurred between August 2024 and January. School officials said Swiney used to work at both Hollymead Elementary School and Woodbrook Elementary School. On June 3, two days after a grand jury handed down his first set of indictments, Swiney turned himself in to police. Months later, on Monday, Oct. 5, Swiney was hit with an additional nine child sexual abuse charges. Authorities said this announcement comes after three more victims came forward. This means Swiney is now accused of sexually abusing a total of seven children. Swiney now faces a total of 20 charges, including: 16 counts of aggravated sexual battery Three counts of indecent liberties One count of attempted aggravated sexual battery "We know this is difficult news for everyone who has been impacted by this case and want to assure the community that our detectives have never stopped working on this investigation," said Michael Talbert, captain of the department's criminal investigations division, in an Oct. 6 press release. "Our detectives have continued to follow new information and work diligently to move this case forward. We will continue that work and do everything within our ability to seek justice." Swiney continues to be held without bond within the Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail.
