All students, as well as the driver, were safely evacuated. One child was taken to a local hospital as a precaution, while the rest were taken to the Central Wellness Center for further evaluation and reunification.
Days later, on Tuesday, Oct. 6, police announced that both involved drivers will be charged.
The bus driver faces a reckless driving charge, while the commercial vehicle's driver was charged with failure to activate hazard lights, failure to display flares and/or other signals and stopping on highways. Neither driver was named by police.
"Highway safety is a shared responsibility and we all have the opportunity to promote safer driving practices," said Cpt. Paul W. Burroughs, who oversees both the department's Highway Safety Unit and the Crash Reconstruction Team, in the release. "We will not accept tragedy on our roadways. Prevention is key."
Authorities added that they are "beyond grateful that this crash did not result in any serious injuries."
