HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- The Henrico County Police Division is terminating its contract with Flock Safety, citing privacy concerns. Flock is receiving a letter from the county on Tuesday, stating the contract will terminate in seven days. Once the contract is terminated, the company will have two weeks to remove 122 cameras from across the county. “We believe that this is the right time to do this, given what’s going on with Flock in regards to data collection, data access, and privacy issues," said Board of Supervisors Chair Roscoe D. Cooper III. Henrico has utilized Flock since 2022, and renewed its contract in July. The county said talks about this decision have been ongoing, following significant input from the community. It is still confident Flock data was only being used for "legitimate, law enforcement purposes." Cooper told 8News that it will not impact the police's ability to prevent and solve crime. “It was a balance between public safety and the fact that people feel like their rights are being infringed upon as they drive through these cameras," said County Manager John Vithoulkas. There is no cost to the county to remove these cameras. All data stored as evidence will be deleted within 30 days. Henrico is one of the first localities in Central Virginia to back away from Flock, behind Goochland, which suspended its usage in August, and Prince Edward County, which suspended its usage in September. “The Flock system is utilized by every locality, so others have access to ours as we have access to theirs," said Cooper.
