HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — The Henrico County Police Division will stop using Flock Safety cameras effective immediately, citing concerns about potential data misuse. The morning of Tuesday, Oct. 6, Henrico County officials took to Facebook to announce that the police division would discontinue the use of Flock Safety cameras, a brand of automatic license plate reader (ALPR). “As a county, we have listened as our residents have shared legitimate concerns about Flock Safety, the proliferation of its cameras across the nation and whether the data collected is sufficiently safeguarded to protect the privacy of individuals in our community,” said Board of Supervisors Chair Roscoe D. Cooper III, of the Fairfield District, in the post. “While we are confident that Henrico Police has used ALPR data appropriately for legitimate law-enforcement purposes only, we cannot ignore the potential for misuse of system data by others. Ending this contract is the right thing to do for our residents and community.” This announcement comes after the Henrico County Police Division rescinded ALPR access to 10 members of the Henrico Fire Marshal’s Office over “violations of state or county code" on Thursday, Aug. 20, after an internal police review. The fire investigators were previously granted access by police as part of their work in criminal cases. Police said the fire investigators’ use of the ALPR system was consistent with Virginia’s statute. MORE: Henrico fire investigators’ license plate camera data access revoked over violations of state law ALPR technology and surveillance cameras have been the subject of significant debate. Some argue these cameras are key investigative tools that promote public safety, while others believe they are an invasion of privacy and prone to misuse. There are 122 Flock Safety-brand ALPR cameras in Henrico County. This is not the first such announcement 8News has reported on over the last few months. The Goochland County Sheriff’s Office and Prince Edward County Sheriff's Office have both suspended the use of data from Flock Safety cameras.
