Skill games coming out of Philadelphia stores as deadline nears
Oct 06, 2026
Pennsylvania businesses have one week left to remove skill games after the state Supreme Court classified the machines as slot machines.
Businesses have until Oct. 13 to remove the machines from bars, corner stores and gas stations. The Pennsylvania Supreme Court gave businesses 120 days to compl
y with its June ruling.
In Philadelphia on Tuesday, a worker for G and B Amusements was removing skill games from stores, including a gas station in the Fairmount neighborhood.
Workers at the gas station said they were thrilled to see the machine removed, saying the games brought “riff raff” into the store and created safety concerns.
Philadelphia City Councilman Anthony Phillips happened to be at the gas station as the machines were being loaded onto a truck.
“I’m excited. I’m literally excited, cause these machines were the worst thing ever, to ever come to our neighborhoods,” Phillips said.
Phillips said the machines had created problems in communities.
“These machines have been a nuisance to the communities. People would be in these gas stations, all night long, just playing the games. They’re causing gambling issues, loitering issues,” Phillips said.
About 70,000 skill games were affected by the state Supreme Court’s ruling.
“Look here’s its full of the games. All those Pennsylvania games, they were not skill games. They were gambling machines in our community. They were legalizing gambling in our neighborhoods,” Phillips said.
The Fairmount gas station where a machine was removed Tuesday had been robbed a couple of months earlier by someone using a sledgehammer to get to the skill games.
NBC10 reached out to the gaming company to ask how the removal of the machines would affect the company but had not heard back.
