Brother Martin High School has broken ground on a multimillion-dollar redevelopment of E.A. Farley Field that will add synthetic turf, new lighting, expanded seating and upgraded athletic facilities to its Gentilly campus.
The New Orleans school held a groundbreaking Sept. 30 for the project, which is expected to be completed in fall 2027. Gibbs Construction is leading construction in partnership with Holly Smith Architects.
Plans call for synthetic turf, LED field lighting, upgraded training areas, new locker rooms and dugouts and expanded spectator seating. The improvements are part of the school’s “Building For Champions: Re-Envisioning Farley Field” capital campaign.
Brother Martin President Greg Rando said the investment continues the school’s history of upgrading its campus to meet students’ needs.
“We have a storied history of meeting the needs of a changing world and providing the best facilities so that our students can always be at their best. We stand on the shoulders of giants, and these additions and improvements came through the effort, support, and loyalty of alumni, Crusader families, and benefactors who wholeheartedly love our mission,” Rando said.
The project represents another investment by the Catholic boys school in its Gentilly campus and follows previous athletic facility improvements.
Gibbs Construction also built Brother Martin’s batting facility in 2023. The New Orleans construction company’s ties to the school extend to founder Larry Gibbs, a 1965 graduate of Cor Jesu High School, one of Brother Martin’s predecessor schools.
“This is a personal one for our family. My father, Larry Gibbs, is a proud Cor Jesu alumnus, Class of 1965, and the values he learned on this campus became the foundation of the company he started in 1976. We were proud to build the batting facility here in 2023, and we’re honored to return alongside Holly Smith Architects to create a field worthy of the young men who will train, compete, and grow here for generations to come,” Gibbs Construction CEO and owner Lauren Gibbs said.
Brother Martin Principal Ryan Gallagher said the redevelopment reflects the school’s continued growth and commitment to its students.
“This project symbolizes the continued strength and growth of Brother Martin High School and is a tangible expression of our commitment to providing our students with exceptional opportunities for formation in the educational tradition of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart,” Gallagher said.
The groundbreaking followed Brother Martin’s annual Foundation Day Liturgy and included students, faculty, alumni, families and community representatives.
Participants included New Orleans City Councilman Eugene Green, representatives from Gibbs Construction and Holly Smith Architects, school administrators and members of Brother Martin’s board, campaign cabinet and St. Aloysius Century Foundation.
