Winter weather enters election season with ‘Vote Super El Niño!’ campaign
Oct 05, 2026
Yard signs from different candidates and campaigns are scattered across town as election season picks up, sometimes leading to disagreements between neighbors. Yet Ski Utah hopes its candidate is one everyone can get behind.
“Vote Super El Niño!” signs and shirts are showing up across the
Wasatch Back, endorsed by the 2026-27 season’s hopeful skiers and snowboarders, after the nonprofit distributed them over the weekend.
“This time of year can feel sometimes a bit divisive, but I think we all, as Utahns and as skiers, are really hoping for more snow and a big winter this year,” said Alison Palmintere, director of communications for Ski Utah.
The campaign, which originated from CEO Nathan Rafferty, was quickly adopted by resorts and the Ski Utah team. On Friday, excited skiers and snowboarders collected hundreds of election-style yard signs at the Ski Utah headquarters in Salt Lake City.
“The community has been really rallying around it … which is really nice to see this time of year and in general,” said Palmintere. “Everybody’s just getting really excited for ski season.”
Ski Utah’s messaging focuses on building up community on and off the slopes.
“This is something that we can all come together on. It’s just something that brings the community together,” said Palmintere. “We encourage everyone to chat with their neighbors and get to know them more. Especially if you see someone with a ‘Vote Super El Niño’ sign, you probably … have something in common with them and something that you can chat with them about.”
Palmintere said she hopes this encourages people to do everything they need to do to get ready for ski season, including cleaning up gear, waxing skis or buying advance passes.
Historically, the effects of El Niño patterns can be unpredictable in Northern Utah, but they have been aligned with some of the highest snow levels on record. Ski Utah is working with forecasters and experts to get the most accurate predictions possible going into the season.
“All things are pointing towards at least average, if not well above average,” Palmintere said. “But it’s called prediction for a reason. We don’t know for sure, but we’re going in on El Niño and I’m pretty excited for the winter.”
Even if the snow turns out to be less than the winter wonderland skiers have been dreaming of, Palmintere said this is a fun way to get people excited about the beginning of the season.
“Vote Super El Niño!” signs and shirts are still available through Ski Utah’s social media and at skiutah.com.
