Indiana Sentinels ready for year two
COLUMBUS, Ind. — The Indiana Sentinels are back and ready to build on their debut season.
The Columbus-based hockey team opens its second year Friday against the Minnesota Northern Lights at the Hamilton Ice Center.
Coach Everett Thompson says Year 2 l
ooks a lot different from Year 1.
“I think last year we had pretty typical first year team hiccups along the way,” Thompson said. “This year we kind of cleaned some of that stuff up.”
That includes a better experience on and off the ice for players and fans alike.
“You’re going to be able to meet the players, get an autograph, maybe get a stick,” Thompson said. “You’re going to feel like you’re right on the ice.”
The Sentinels play in the Tier 3 single-A professional level, the first step on the ladder toward the NHL. Thompson says the league is growing fast, expanding nationally for the first time in its 17th season, stretching from New York to California.
“It gets our players seen by teams like Indy Fuel and the ECHL,” he said. “Hopefully we get guys up there more consistently as we grow.”
As for Friday’s opener, fans can expect fast, physical hockey and a good time.
“It’s a lot of fun,” Thompson said. “There’s some mistakes, it gets a little rowdy sometimes, but that’s what makes it fun.”
