A woman with a history of committing seemingly random acts of violence is now accused of fatally stabbing a 7-year-old girl in an “unprovoked” attack in Chatham over the weekend, according to police and court records.Shavon Gayden, 48, faces a count of first-degree murder in the death of Eddimar
Hernández-Chacón Saturday, the records show.Eddimar and her sister were walking in the 8600 block of South Cottage Grove Avenue just before noon when Gayden approached them and started stabbing Eddimar with a knife, according to an initial police report obtained by the Chicago Sun-Times.The deadly attack was “unprovoked,” the report says.Moments before, Gayden had been inside a business on Cottage Grove threatening a salesperson, Assistant State’s Attorney Mike Pekara said in court Monday. She left and approached Eddimar and her 17-year-old sister as they walked down the street holding hands, Pekara said.Gayden pulled a knife from her tote bag and initially lunged toward the older sister, who ducked out of the way, Pekara said. Gayden then grabbed Eddimar, pulled her to the ground and "began to stab her repeatedly," according to Pekara.A large, angry crowd formed around the young girl as she lay bleeding on the sidewalk, according to police records and emergency radio recordings. As Gayden walked away, a group ran after her and at least one person struck her, Pekara said. When police arrived, Gayden was unconscious but breathing, according to a police report. She suffered an injury to her left temple and had arterial bleeding.Confusion reigned as the responding officers tried to summon an ambulance to the chaotic scene for the wounded girl.“Where’s that ambo?” one officer shouted to a dispatcher as other officers tried to stanch Eddimar’s bleeding by lifting her head.It took about 10 minutes for the ambulance to arrive, and it was escorted by police to Comer Children’s Hospital. Eddimar was pronounced dead at 1:01 p.m. Saturday, officials said. Pekara said the girl had been stabbed four times in her back.

Police recovered more knives in Gayden's tote bag, Pekara said. Gayden was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center. She remained hospitalized with a head injury and didn’t attend Monday’s court hearing. A detention hearing was postponed until Wednesday.Court records show Gayden’s criminal history includes other seemingly random attacks. In September 2023, Gayden was charged after striking a CTA employee and threatening to “shank” her, according to a police report. In October 2024, she pleaded guilty to those charges and received probation for two years. She was arrested again for attacking a shelter worker about a month after her plea deal, according to court records. Then Gayden stopped showing up to court in the CTA case, and a warrant was issued for her arrest in February 2025, according to court records. The warrant was still active when she was arrested Saturday.Gayden had continued to appear at hearings in the later case and eventually pleaded guilty to attacking the shelter worker, according to court records. She received six months of court supervision that she completed in January.Eddimar’s family gathered Sunday at the scene of the attack to remember the young girl.A GoFundMe launched by her uncle had raised about $3,600 as of Monday afternoon. All funds will go toward funeral costs and providing Eddimar a “dignified farewell,” her uncle wrote in Spanish.“To our family, Eddimar will always be a very special girl,” he wrote. “Her passing leaves an indescribable void and immense pain for all of us who loved her.”
