A man was found guilty of beating another man to death in North Philadelphia following an argument over a woman. On Sept. 24, 2026, Darien Ramsey, 62, was convicted of third-degree murder and possessing an instrument of crime. His sentencing is scheduled for Nov. 20, 2026. On Feb. 1, 2024, around 6 p.m., Philadelphia police responded to a report of a person with a weapon along the 2700 block of North Ringgold Street. When they arrived, they found a man matching the description of the suspect, later identified as Ramsey. The officers arrested Ramsey on an outstanding probation warrant. Meanwhile, other officers and medics found 55-year-old Mark Jennings who was lying on a nearby sidewalk unresponsive. Jennings was intubated and diagnosed with bleeding in his brain. He never regained consciousness and later died from his injuries four days later on Feb. 5, 2024. The witness who initially called 911 said Ramsey and Jennings had been arguing over a relationship with a woman throughout the day on Feb. 1, 2024. The witness said they heard Ramsey strike Jennings in the back of the head with a stick or pipe. They then saw Ramsey kick Jennings in the head twice as he was on the ground. The witness said Ramsey then yelled, “I told you I was gonna kill you.” On Dec. 3, 2024, Ramsey was transported to the Philadelphia Police homicide unit after being apprehended in New York. During the interview, Ramsey denied killing Jennings but admitted to knowing him and striking him with a stick immediately before the killing. Ramsey also claimed “somebody else” hit Jennings in the head with a baseball bat. After announcing Ramsey’s conviction, Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner praised the witness who reported the incident. “In an age of modern forensics and surveillance, this case would not have been solved if not for an eyewitness who had the courage to come forward and speak up about what they witnessed to maintain the safety of their community,” Krasner wrote in a statement released on Monday, Oct. 5, 2026. “That is what Philadelphia is all about — neighbors looking out for neighbors. I also want to thank Assistant District Attorney Sean Perez for successfully prosecuting this case and obtaining justice for Mr. Jennings and his family.” ...read more read less
