INDIANAPOLIS — A 31-year-old suspect has been arrested in connection with a hit-and-run that killed a 9-year-old boy and injured a 5-year-old boy on the city’s northwest side Sunday. Franck Bazil is facing a charge of leaving the scene of an accident-causing death. Police say he was d riving the vehicle that struck and killed 9-year-old Ronald McLain III and injured a 5-year-old boy near Wylde at Eagle Creek apartments, located off West 46th Street. Bazil was making a right-turn when he cut it too sharp and drove over the curb and into the grass, striking the two boys, police say. Mclain III was rushed to the hospital with “grave” injuries and later died. His brother was admitted to the ICU in critical condition with internal injuries. Police later said he was stable. According to a probable cause affidavit obtained by News 8, officers with the Lawrence Police Department located the black Ford SUV Bazil was driving less than three hours after the incident, using license plate reader technology. He was found in line at a carwash near Pendleton Pike and E. 56th Street, documents state. Police waited for him to exit the lot, pulled him over, and took him into custody. According to the affidavit, during questioning with police, Bazil said he was leaving his apartment when he hit something. Bazil told police that someone honked their horn at him and told him he hit a child. He stopped but did not check on anyone. After Bazil realized he hit a child he said he left because he was “scared, not knowing where to go,” the affidavit states. Bazil said he drove around and called his family, who told him to turn himself in to police. He also said he did not drink alcohol or take any drugs before the crash. Police did not observe any impairment but took Bazil in for a blood draw. He was then arrested. On Sunday evening, Indianapolis City-County Council President Maggie A. Lewis issued the following statement regarding the incident: “I recently learned of the tragic hit-and-run crash in our community that claimed the life of a 9-year-old child, and I am heartbroken by this devastating loss. My deepest condolences are with his family, and I am praying for the 5-year-old child who remains hospitalized in stable condition and for his family’s continued strength. “I commend IMPD and Lawrence Police for their swift work in identifying and arresting a suspect. Accountability matters, particularly when a child’s life has been lost. “But this tragedy also demands that we take a hard look at traffic and pedestrian safety in our neighborhoods. Our children deserve to be safe on the streets and in the communities they call home. We, as a community, must continue to work together with law enforcement and city agencies to identify dangerous areas, strengthen pedestrian protections, and pursue solutions that prevent another family from experiencing this kind of devastating loss. “My heart is with these families and our entire community as we grieve.” ...read more read less
