71yearold man charged with DUI after wrongway crash with Virginia State Police car

PRINCE GEORGE COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- A man was charged with driving under the influence after a wrong-way crash with a state trooper on Interstate 295 in Prince George County early Sunday morning.
According to Virginia State Police, 71-year-old Edward Junious Whitby of Newport News was driving south
in the northbound lanes of I-295 at around 1 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 4, when police received reports of a wrong-way vehicle.
A Virginia State Police trooper was driving north on I-295 to intercept Whitby's vehicle when he encountered the car driving toward him north of Courthouse Road, police said.
According to VSP, the trooper activated his emergency equipment and attempted to slow down before Whitby's car hit the police vehicle head-on at around 1 a.m.

The trooper was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Whitby was evaluated at the scene and arrested, police said.
Whitby has been charged with driving under the influence and driving the wrong way on a highway, according to VSP.
The crash is under investigation.
