18th annual German Fest INDIANAPOLIS — Polka beats and the aroma of sizzling bratwursts took over downtown Indianapolis Saturday as the 18th annual German Fest returned to the historic Athenaeum. The event, a celebration of German culture and traditions, transformed the landmark into a hub o f activity for families and heritage enthusiasts alike. “We’re enjoying German culture, getting to know our city a little better,” said festivalgoer Rion Basu. Nine polka bands performed throughout the day while attendees ate bratwursts, pretzels and other traditional fare. For the adults, the menu featured a variety of German and craft beers, including pilsners, Oktoberfest brews and Dunkels. “I’ve got a pilsner, they’ve got Pilseners, Oktoberfest, Dunkels, they’ve got them all,” said festivalgoer Tim Holden. The festivities extended beyond food and music to include several tests of strength and speed. In the traditional stein-holding contest, participants held full steins with arms extended and elbows straight, attempting to outlast their rivals for up to 10 minutes. While strength challenges tested the endurance of the adults, the “wiener dog” dachshund races provided entertainment for all ages. “Love the weine races, we love the brat-eating contests, and just the good company of Indianapolis as a whole,” said festivalgoer Elijah Rotto. News 8’s Gina Glaros emceed the event, which brought the community together to celebrate German heritage. Every dollar raised from the event supports the maintenance and preservation of the 130-year-old Athenaeum building. Organizers noted that while many cultural events happen throughout the year, German Fest remains a cornerstone of their fundraising efforts. ...read more read less
