BATON ROUGE mdash; With both LSU and Southern playing home football games this weekend, Baton Rouge enjoyed a double dose of tailgating action. At Southern University, alumni returned to campus Saturday to cap off a week of homecoming celebrations. For alumni like Wendell James, celebrating on campus is an annual tradition and will always have a special place in his heart. "I love it, though; this is my heart. We always bleed blue and gold. It's one of the things that my wife and I do," James said.Kevin Brown, a 2012 Southern graduate and former member of the Human Jukebox marching band, reconnected with old friends while introducing his children to his alma mater."It's a blessing, man, being able to experience it because without this institution, I wouldn't be the man I am today, and I'm just trying to pass it down to the next generation to keep it going. That's what it's all about," Brown said. That passion for homecoming culture is shared by current students making the most of their time on campus."This is my last undergrad homecoming, so I'm glad the rain is holding up, and it's going well, rdquo; Southern student Laila Cost said. ldquo; It's really my favorite time of the year.rdquo;Less than 10 miles away, LSU fans were hosting a unique tailgate of their own outside the Parker Coliseum.Local enthusiast groups Bayou Broncos and 225 Jeepers teamed up to line the parking lot with customized vehicles featuring custom decals, flashing lights and Saints gear."We got all the jeeps out here. We got all the Broncos lined up, and you can come by and look at them. We're friendly, come hang out, come get some food," 225 Jeepers member Emily Schulin said. While the vehicles drew a crowd, organizers emphasized that the community aspect matters most."Mostly it's just being able to bring veterans together, first responders, being able to have each other's back and support each other through trail rides, through community outreach," Bayou Broncos founder Michael Martin said.Whether at Southern or LSU, Saturday proved to be a special day for reuniting with old friends and making new ones. Both teams will head out on the road next week, but Tailgate on 2 will return for the next home games.
