Shemar Moore Jokingly Blames Tyler Perry for His ‘Crooked’ Wig In ‘Diary of a Mad Black Woman,’ Then Reveals the One Line He Regrets

The hair department over Tyler Perry‘s movies has been a running joke for his audience and movie lovers.
The conversation resurfaced after the filmmaker dropped the third installment of his “Why Did I Get Married” franchise, “Why Did I Get Married Again,” last month.

Critiques about Perry’s wigs have been ongoing since his very first film, “Diary of a Mad Black Woman.” Fans often bring up the cornrow wig worn by Shemar Moore’s character in the 2005 film.
The “S.W.A.T.” star is now making it clear that he agrees with that same narrative.

On Wednesday, Sept. 30, Moore appeared on “Views and Vibes.” He talked about the “f-cked up wig” in front of a live audience in New York City.
While promoting his new show “S.W.A.T. Exiles,” Moore was asked to reflect on his character Orlando and share what the Perry film did for his career.
Before taking the time to really answer the question, Moore immediately cracked a joke about the wig.
“It was that crooked f-cked up wig,” he said, drawing laughter from the crowd.
During his off-topic rant, Moore expressed regret about one line Perry insisted his character say. It was during a scene where Orlando finally professed his love to the main character, Helen, played by Kimberly Elise.
“There was a line that Tyler insisted that I say, and I was like hell nah,” Moore shared.
He said they had a tense back-and-forth about one line: “Baby I love you so much I would go to the grocery store and buy your feminine products.'”
Moore paused before adding, “You don’t tell your girl that you gon’ go buy some tampons and some pads.”
According to him, women should buy their own products. The actor then praised the film for its impact before later castigating the wig more.
“I think the movie had a wonderful message,” Moore said. “It was a faith movie. It was a relationship movie. It was love by any means necessary and being loved the right way.”
He also noted that Black women loved him after the film.
But despite the message, the 56-year-old still seemed traumatized by his character’s hair.
“And I was like, ‘Yeah, but f-ck that wig though,’” he said. “That’s why I was wearing that bandana. I was wearing that bandana so you couldn’t see the glue.”
Moore said at times the wig was “cocked to the side.” He would tell the crew, “Give me the d-mn bandana and let’s keep it pushing.”
Unfortunately for Moore, “Diary of a Mad Black Woman” wouldn’t be the last time he had to wear the wig.
In 2004 and 2005, he returned as photographer Malcolm Winters on “The Young and the Restless” after a three-year absence.
Moore initially left to pursue other projects, but returned a few years later.
Upon his return, his character had grown out his original neat low cut into cornrows. But it matched the Winters’ storyline.
After Moore’s departure, Winters was presumed dead after a bridge collapse in Kenya. When Moore returned to “The Young and the Restless,” writers revealed Winters survived with help from a local family.
Fans have mentioned Moore’s wig, along with other actors’ poor wigs, in Perry films.
One said, “10min into Why did I get married again? and the acting?? They put Mike in that Shemar Moore wig,” referencing Mike from the “Why Did I Get Married Again” movie.
A second fan wrote, “Shemar Moore and this braided matted ass wig will forever stress me out everytime I watch Diary Of A Mad Black Woman.”
In 2021, the “Meet the Browns” filmmaker finally addressed the criticism on “The Tyler Perry Show: Sistas After-Show Edition.”
“I want all of y’all to stop talking about hair to me, please,” Perry said, before later adding,“I don’t know how to do hair. I don’t know nothing about it.”
He added, “I hire people to do hair. Pay them $65 an hour.”
The “Alex Cross” star praised the team for doing a good job on 10-12 hour shifts. Perry also admitted things sometimes slip because he rushes.
He made a last plea to fans, saying, “Stop asking me about some damn hair. “Go talk to somebody that’s got a hot curler.”
