Superintendent hatches ducks in his office and sparking lessons in the classroom

In the corner of Superintendent Toby Tucker’s office, something stands out a bit. He has eggs in an incubator under his close watch and that of the students of Anna ISD
“We want to do something every year that connects my office to our classroom,” said Tucker.
Coming from a farming famil
y, he decided he wanted to teach his students how to raise animals.
“Our kids a lot of times don’t have the opportunity, living in the city, to experience things like this, so we thought this would be a really fun project,” he said.
Tucker bought some fertilized eggs, set up the equipment, and sent video updates to the elementary classrooms all around the district.
He calls it quack cam, and it became a hit with students wanting to learn exactly what was happening inside the eggs.
He brought in his high school students to help study the changes happening inside the shell and agriculture students to take over once they hatch.
Teachers started teaching more about the life cycle. No one minded the hard work in the classroom because they knew one day, it would pay off.
Students at Hendrix Elementary were some of the first to meet them. It was a mix of love and learning.
“What they’re looking for is the weight, the height, and just the coloring of the ducks,” said Zoey Patin, a high school student caring for the ducks.
The agriculture students will not just care for the ducks but plan to show them off at the Fort Worth Stock Show. In the meantime, they’re most excited to share them with Anna ISD’s little learners.
“This also gives them the opportunity to see what agriculture is like. It’s not only for high school, but it’s also for everyone else. It’s for them to adventure out and show, ‘Hey, this is fun, I want to do this’,” said Abbigail Hooker, an agriculture student.
A whole family of baby ducks may have wondered what happened to their mom, but they seemed to know who their dad was as Superintendent Tucker led them from campus to campus.
