A deputy-involved shooting at a Pasco County strip mall Friday afternoon left a man dead after deputies responded to a trespassing call, according to the Pasco Sheriff's Office. Deputies were called to a shopping plaza on Little Road around 12:30 p.m. after receiving reports of a man who was screaming and yelling, the sheriff's office said. When deputies arrived, they encountered a man who was holding what officials described as a 7.5-inch butcher knife.According to the Pasco Sheriff's Office, deputies repeatedly ordered the man to drop the knife. Officials said those commands were given six times, but the man did not comply. A deputy then fired his weapon, striking the man.The man was transported to a hospital, where he later died from his injuries, said Pasco Sheriff's Office Col. Jeff Harrington.Harrington said the man did not attack the deputy with the knife, but deputies were concerned about public safety. The concerning thing to us was that there were people walking around. This was an open business where this person was challenged by the deputies, Harrington said. There were other folks walking in this area and this person had a 7.5-inch butcher knife. The concern was not necessarily on what he did or did not do to the Deputy Sheriff, but the safety of the people walking around.A witness who asked not to be identified said he watched the entire encounter unfold. The witness said he believes the deputy acted appropriately based on the circumstances. The officer did what he had to do. He felt his life was in danger, the witness said. He gave the suspect numerous chances to drop everything. He didnt do it. He kept rushing at the officer, reaching into the bag. I do not blame the officer at all.The witness added that seeing the shooting was traumatic.I wasnt expecting to see somebody get shot first thing Friday morning, he said. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement will investigate the shooting, as is standard procedure in officer-involved shootings. The identity of the man who was killed has not yet been released. The investigation remains ongoing.Watch press conference here: Deputy-involved shooting in Hudson leaves man dead: PSO ...read more read less
