One of Greater New Orleans’ longest-running family-owned retailers is preparing to close its doors after more than a century in business.
Hurwitz Mintz Furniture has announced a store closing sale at its longtime Metairie showroom at 1751 Airline Drive as the company winds down operations after 102 years.
The Hurwitz Mintz family has issued the following statement:
“With the passing of Mitchell L. Mintz, after three generations, 102 years, and countless memories, Hurwitz Mintz Furniture is closing its doors forever. For more than a century, Hurwitz Mintz has had the privilege of serving the greater New Orleans community and the families who have welcomed us into their homes.”
The retailer is offering discounts of 60% to 70% storewide. All sales during the liquidation are final and merchandise is being sold as-is, with no holds, returns, exchanges, refunds, credits, cancellations, or special orders.
“As we bring this chapter to a close, our remaining inventory of more than $4 million will be available to our valued customers at liquidation prices,” the family continued.
“We are grateful for the time we shared with the community, our employees, and for everyone who made it all possible.”
Hurwitz Mintz has remained under Mintz family ownership for three generations. The largest furniture store in the Greater New Orleans area marked its 100th anniversary in 2024. The business traces its roots to New Orleans, where Joseph Hurwitz and Morris Mintz opened the original store on Royal Street in the 1920s. Family members continued operating the company after the founders’ deaths.
The company eventually expanded beyond its French Quarter roots, opening its large Airline Drive showroom in Metairie in 2000. The Royal Street store remained a fixture in the French Quarter for decades. Hurricane Katrina disrupted its operations in 2005, and the location later closed, while the Airline Drive store became the company’s primary retail presence.
