Three candidates have filed to run for a newly vacant seat representing Edgewood on the Board of Alders, now that Evette Hamilton has officially concluded her 15-year tenure representing Ward 24. Local realtor Jennifer Tillman has entered the race for Hamilton’s former seat, joining Randall Fu rlow and Lindsey Tengatenga (A.K.A. Lindsey Eichler). All three candidates are Democrats. Furlow is a Ward 24 Democratic Ward Committee co-chair, a pastor, and a cousin of Board of Alders Majority Leader Richard Furlow. Click here to read more about his candidacy. Tengatenga is the executive director of a statewide organization that brings together leaders from different sectors to advance racial equity, a mom of two, and a 12-year resident of Edgewood Avenue. Click here to read more about her candidacy. Tillman is currently a realtor affiliated with Diamond Realty Partners. Previously, she worked for three decades as a social worker focusing on mental health and addiction, according to her professional biography, and she volunteers with the Varick Church Soup Kitchen, the Perfect Blend mentorship program, and a variety of other community groups. The special election will take place on Nov. 10. The deadline for individual candidates to petition onto the ballot, and for political parties to submit candidate nominations, is Monday, Oct. 5. (Update 5:49) The Ward 24 Democratic Ward Committee will meet on Sunday, Oct. 4, at 3 p.m. at the Whalley Avenue police substation to make an endorsement. The Nov. 10 special election in Ward 24 will be the third special election for alder in New Haven so far this year. Christine Kim won a February election to become the alder for Downtown/East Rock’s Ward 7 after incumbent Eli Sabin stepped down in January. Maria-Threese Serana won a September election to become the alder for East Rock/Fair Haven’s Ward 9 after incumbent Caroline Tanbee Smith stepped down in August.
