I76 to close next weekend for Market Street Bridge demolition
Oct 02, 2026
A section of Interstate 76 will close overnight beginning this weekend to accommodate the demolition of the Market Street Bridge.
The Market Street Bridge demolition is part of the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation’s 14-month, $148.9 million project to rehabilitate the bridges that carr
y Market Street over Amtrak and I-76, the Schuylkill River Trail, and the CSX Railroad in Center City, Philadelphia.
Nightly one-direction closures will begin Sunday, Oct. 4, and continue through Thursday, Oct. 8, from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. the following morning. Either eastbound or westbound I-76, the Schuylkill Expressway, will be closed and detoured between the I-676 and 30th Street interchanges.
According to officials, the direction of these closures will be determined by events near the Sports Complex in South Philly and demolition progress.
Beginning at 9 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 9, I-76 will be closed in both directions between the I-676 and 30th Street interchanges for two full days, ending at 5 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 12.
Eastbound I-76 drivers will be directed to exit at Arch Street and 30th Street, to turn left on Chestnut Street, and to turn right onto Schuylkill Avenue to access the ramp to I-76 at Walnut Street.
Westbound I-76 drivers will be directed to exit at Walnut Street and follow Schuylkill Avenue to I-76 and I-676.
PennDOT advises drivers to allow for additional time when traveling along the detour routes and work areas due to expected backups and delays.
