It has been one week to the day since a school bus crash claimed the life of a 13-year-old Sanger boy. Julian Amador celebrated his 13th birthday exactly one week before the tragic incident. Approximately 200 people attended his funeral on Wednesday, according to his parents Brenda Lopez and E mmanuel Amador. Julian was about two minutes away from his mother’s home on September 24. His father was waiting for him at the bus stop and had received a message from Julian saying he was almost home. Moments later, their son and a handful of students on board their school bus were involved in a horrifying crash. His father noticed Julian’s GPS location was not moving and eventually made his way to the terrible scene. Texas DPS responded to Huling Road, where a Sanger ISD school bus veered off the road, struck a culvert and rolled over, according to the agency’s initial investigation. DPS says the 38-year-old driver and three students were treated on the scene for minor injuries. Julian suffered blunt force trauma to the left side of his head, according to Lopez. Despite CPR administered on scene for several minutes and transported to the hospital soon after, Julian’s injuries were too severe. He died just before 6 p.m. Lopez and Amador agreed to sit down with NBC 5 on Thursday to talk about their little boy, his legacy, and the many questions they still have about the crash. “I wish this to nobody,” said Amador. “Nobody.” In addition to the unbearable pain of losing their only son, they’re enduring an agonizing wait for answers in his death. “Even though I am ripped apart right now, I’m doing it for him,” said Lopez. “He’s given me the strength to push through.” While Julian’s parents express deep gratitude for the outpouring of support from the community, teachers, students, coaches and students, they are disheartened by the lack of information provided by administrators and law enforcement immediately following the crash, at times encountering a lack of empathy when asking questions. Lopez is asking that every detail about the moments leading up to the crash be shared without “sugar-coating” it. “I need to know what caused the accident in the beginning, not just: they hit the covert and it flipped over,” she said. “It was about 500 feet [from the moment driver went off the road], you had the opportunity to brake…There was no hills. It was flat land, so I need to know what caused it to get off the road.” Lopez said a child on board the bus shared that Julian had been sitting alone in the back of the bus at the time of the crash. The school bus was equipped with security video on board, which has been turned over to investigators, she said. Beyond that, she knows nothing. NBC 5 and Telemundo 39 have been asking Sanger ISD for information on the school bus driver, including his employment history, current job status and to respond to claims of past complaints. The district’s spokeswoman has not responded to our calls or emails. NBC 5 asked DPS for any new information on the investigation and whether speed or distracted driving may have played a role in the crash. A spokesman for DPS would only say the investigation is ongoing. Lopez shared a heartwrenching detail with NBC 5: Julian always asked her to be the one to cut his hair. He had just had it cut the day before the accident. While they readied for Julian funeral services, she noticed her son’s hair was all wrong. So she carefully brushed her son’s hair like she did when he was an infant with little strands of hair. She was also looking forward to taking her son camping and continuing to celebrate his birthday. Julian’s legacy will be that of a humble child, always thinking of others; always making sure mom and dad did not spend too much on gifts for him. A bright boy in advanced classes who was “always building something,” always asking dad for tools and dreamed of becoming an architect. “It will never be the same, but I know he’s my hero,” said Amador. “Great boy. Really good.” He loved comic book superheroes like Spider-Man. He adored his big sister Alina, who calls him her best friend. “From the time he started daycare to his last days in school, I always got compliments on how well he was raised,” said Lopez. ...read more read less
