Two people were found dead in an apartment in the Del Cerro neighborhood on Wednesday afternoon after an hour-long SWAT standoff. San Diego Police said they received a call Tuesday to the 5700 block of College Avenue after a neighbor reported hearing possible gunshots around 2:30 p.m. Officers c hecked the area but found nothing suspicious. On Wednesday, San Diego Police said they returned to the same apartment to conduct a welfare check after a relative called to say their family member was not responding to phone calls and didn’t show up to work, which was unusual. Officers then forced entry into the home and found a 47-year-old woman dead, police said. After searching the rest of the home, they encountered a closed bedroom door and, “based on what they knew at the scene,” believed an armed person might be barricaded inside. The officers exited the home, and that is when a SWAT standoff ensued. After several hours and no response, officers entered the bedroom and found a 40-year-old man dead, SDPD said. Detectives from the San Diego Police Department’s Homicide Unit are investigating. Investigators will work with the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office to determine the cause and manner of death for both people. The names of the deceased are being withheld until their families have been notified. Anyone with information regarding this incident is encouraged to call the Homicide Unit at (619) 531-2293 or Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477. ...read more read less
