EVANSVILLE, Ind. — University of Evansville students are using artificial intelligence and a student-built robot to identify sidewalk accessibility problems throughout Evansville. The project, called Sidewalks4All, uses a GPS-equipped robot named “Gizmo” to scan sidewalks and identify featu res including curb ramps, crosswalks, obstacles and surface conditions. The students are using artificial intelligence and computer vision to collect the information and create a sidewalk quality map, beginning in Evansville’s Promise Neighborhood. The project also includes a mobile Walk Audit application that allows residents to report sidewalk problems, including cracks and missing crosswalks. The information submitted by residents will be used to help train the project’s AI models. The interdisciplinary project involves students and faculty from computer science, civil engineering and electrical engineering. The faculty team includes computer science professors Maxwell Omwenga and Ying Ying Seah, civil engineering professor Jesus Osorio and electrical engineering professor Hector Will.
