Faith Amid The Storms
Sep 30, 2026
“Faith Matters” is a column that features pieces written by local religious figures.
After the nor’easter that just came through, I hope the damage was minimal for you, your family, and your community. It brought a reminder of how quickly the weather can disrupt our plans—and how gratefu
l we are when the skies begin to clear.
But even when the rain stops and the winds settle, many of us are facing storms that don’t appear on a weather map.
A health crisis. Grief. Tension at home. Financial pressure. A painful decision. A season when God seems quiet and the way forward is hard to see. These storms can leave us feeling shaken, tired, and unsure of what to do next.
Faith doesn’t mean pretending we aren’t afraid or insisting that everything is fine. It means bringing our real fears and questions to God, while trusting that trouble does not have the final word. The psalmist writes, “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble” (Psalm 46:1). God may not remove every storm as soon as we ask, but we can trust that we are not abandoned in it.
So how do we face the storms of life?
We can take the next faithful step, even when we can’t see the whole road. We can pray honestly, seek wise counsel, and let trusted people stand beside us. We can accept practical help without shame. And when the burden feels too heavy to carry, we can remember that asking for help is not a failure of faith.
We also need to give ourselves grace. Some storms take time to pass. Healing may come gradually. Answers may arrive one day at a time. In the meantime, God can give us strength for today and hope for tomorrow.
The storm may be real, but so is the presence of God. And we don’t have to face it alone.
