Stacy Spotlight-Exploration Acres INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Fall is officially here, and one of the region’s favorite autumn traditions is back. Exploration Acres opened its gates Sept. 18, welcoming families to a new corn maze celebrating America’s 250th anniversary across 23 acres. Co-o wner Tim Fitzgerald said this year’s maze is the farm’s most ambitious design yet. “We wanted to honor this milestone in our nation’s history,” Fitzgerald said. “It’s amazing to see families from all backgrounds come together here. We have Purdue students from 139 countries who make this an annual tradition.” A Midwest fall tradition Located about 20 minutes southeast of Purdue University, Exploration Acres has grown into one of the region’s largest corn mazes and pumpkin patches since opening in 2008. This year marks the farm’s 19th maze design. The winding paths cover 10 miles and include 28 checkpoints featuring coupons from local businesses and national chains, including Texas Roadhouse. “Most people take about an hour and 40 minutes to hit all 28 checkpoints,” Fitzgerald said. “We provide free maps, and you can download our GPS app by scanning a QR code at the entrance.” More than a maze The farm’s 11-acre u-pick pumpkin patch features more than 50 varieties of pumpkins and gourds. Wagon rides take visitors to the patch, where smaller wagons are available to help haul pumpkins and other fall finds. Wooded areas throughout the farm include fire pits that provide a spot for family photos and gatherings. An activity area also gives children something to do between exploring the maze and picking pumpkins. “We’ve become a place where memories are made,” Fitzgerald said. “Grandparents bring their grandkids. College students bring friends from around the world. That’s what it’s all about.” Local flavors Visitors can also stop by the country store for locally sourced products showcasing Indiana agriculture. Nanny Boo’s popcorn is cooked on-site, while honey comes from bees that pollinated the pumpkin patch. Kettle corn is available in traditional and Cinnamon Toast Crunch flavors. Local vendors also provide fudge, pumpkin butter and maple syrup.
