Community Link Indianapolis Drifters INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Each week on Community Link, Carolene Mays takes a look at an organization or business that is making a positive impact on the community. This week, Mays was joined by members of the Indianapolis Drifters. The Indianapolis Drifters a re celebrating 70 years of service and commitment to the local community. The group has grown into a network of 700 members across 38 chapters, including two chapters dedicated to serving the Indianapolis area. Women originally formed the organization to find a social outlet and connect with like-minded individuals through fellowship and service. The mission rests on three pillars: voter education, youth support, and senior citizen advocacy. These focus areas guide the group’s various initiatives throughout the year. Local efforts have included providing scholarships to deserving high school graduates, tutoring students at Liberty Grove School, and organizing voter registration drives to help residents learn where and how to vote. To honor seven decades of impact, the organization will host a special celebration on Saturday, Oct. 17, at the Sheraton Keystone at the Crossing. The day begins with an awards luncheon at noon to recognize three prominent community leaders for their work within the organization’s core pillars. The honorees include Shannon Williams, Vicki Peterson and state Rep. Nakisha Jackson. The anniversary festivities continue later that evening with a Grown Folks Night Out event. This elegant evening of fellowship and music will feature RB artist Sherelle and entertainment by DJ Run.
